Opera Park in Copenhagen

Short description

Cobe Opera Park is a green oasis next to the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen's inner harbour. It is divided into six gardens with fauna from all over the world, including a subtropical garden in a greenhouse, which also houses a café and the entrance to an underground car park with 300 spaces. The plants, with 223 unique exotic and native species, are a reminder of the island's history as a shipping port that brought the world to Copenhagen.

Opera Park is a public waterfront park on a former industrial island in Copenhagen's inner harbour. The park provides a green counterpoint to the city's otherwise densely built harbour. Located next to the Opera House, the site had been a modest green lawn since the completion of the Opera nearly 20 years ago. Today, the island, which had been earmarked for new housing developments, has been completely transformed and is now home to a diverse landscape.

The park consists of six gardens from different parts of the world: the North American Forest, the Danish Oak Forest, the Nordic Forest, the Oriental Garden, the English Garden and the Subtropical Garden, which is housed in a greenhouse. The gardens contain surprises such as a fountain and a water lily pond. Meandering paths and organically shaped flower beds link the elements of the park together. Designed as a year-round public attraction, the park features 628 trees, 80,000 shrubs and 40,000 bulb plants from around the world. In total, 223 unique exotic and native species provide a vibrant, ever-changing backdrop for visitors, while honouring the island's history as a shipping hub that brought the world to Copenhagen.

The park's central greenhouse and café is an organically shaped glass structure with a floating roof, designed to surprise visitors as they navigate the lush landscape. The greenhouse and café ensure that The Opera Park remains a vibrant destination throughout the year. Inside, the Greenhouse's terraces descend to an underground car park that can accommodate 300 cars, while its subtropical biotope also descends to vertically weave the park with the underground levels. The park also features a covered link to the adjacent Opera House via a covered walkway on a landscaped bridge, providing a weather-protected link between the car park and the Opera. The link is designed as a piece of nature crossing the harbour, fully integrating landscape and architecture into one.
